In November 2024, XCMG signed China’s largest green mining equipment export deal with Fortescue, one of the world’s leading iron ore producers. This landmark cooperation reflects not only Fortescue’s strong commitment to decarbonisation, but also XCMG’s leadership in sustainable heavy machinery innovation.

A LANDMARK ZERO-EMISSION FLEET

Between 2028–2030, XCMG will deliver 150–200 pure-electric 240-ton mining trucks, which will account for nearly half of Fortescue’s fleet renewal plan. These trucks will play a critical role in helping Fortescue meet its 2030 zero-emissions target.

Starting in 2026, XCMG will also supply battery-electric loaders, dozers, water carts, and graders, further supporting Fortescue’s large-scale iron ore operations in Pilbara, Australia.

This project positions XCMG as the first Chinese construction machinery manufacturer to deliver such a massive fleet of zero-emission equipment to a global mining giant.

HIGH-LEVEL VISIT TO XCMG

Fortescue’s Chairman Dr Andrew Forrest and CEO of Metals and Operations Dino Otranto personally visited Xuzhou, where they observed the first units under assembly at XCMG’s state-of-the-art production facilities. Their visit symbolises the trust and confidence Fortescue has placed in XCMG’s advanced technologies and manufacturing capabilities.

A SHARED VISION FOR DECARBONISATION

As Fortescue’s Metals and Operations CEO Dino Otranto highlighted:

“To achieve full decarbonisation, Fortescue must replace hundreds of diesel-powered mining machines with zero-emission alternatives. XCMG’s advanced battery-electric equipment provides the reliable solution we need for this transition.”

This cooperation is not only a business milestone, but also a joint step forward in global mining sustainability.

FORTESCUE’S REAL ZERO STRATEGY

Fortescue has announced its ambition to completely eliminate emissions by 2030 without relying on carbon offsets, under its “Real Zero” strategy.

To clarify the targets:

Scope 1 emissions: Direct emissions from Fortescue’s own mining operations, such as fuel combustion in trucks, loaders, and processing plants.

Scope 2 emissions: Indirect emissions from purchased electricity used in its operations.

Scope 3 emissions: Indirect emissions generated along the value chain, mainly from steelmaking, where Fortescue’s iron ore is processed using coal-based methods that generate large amounts of CO₂.

By partnering with XCMG, Fortescue can dramatically cut Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions from its mining operations. Meanwhile, its Green Metal Project in Pilbara is exploring breakthrough technologies to lower Scope 3 emissions from the steel industry.

XCMG’S ROLE IN THE FUTURE OF MINING

For XCMG, this partnership is proof of our ability to deliver world-class, zero-emission solutions on a scale that supports the decarbonisation of one of the toughest industries on earth.

As the global mining sector continues its transition, XCMG stands at the forefront, providing sustainable, intelligent, and reliable equipment that empowers our partners and accelerates the journey toward a greener future.
